What could be more reassuring, more heart-warming, than the sight of a little old lady knitting (tic, tic, tic) whilst sitting in her rocking chair (couiic, couiic, couiic)? Beware, this seemingly peaceful scene hides a far more disturbing reality! The garment the old lady has set about making does indeed look very much like a convict’s uniform, it’s true, but that’s not the scariest part! Her aggressive features – despite her smile – her narrow forehead and prominent jaw, and the mischievous glint in her eyes behind her spectacles give her away: yes! It’s definitely her! The fearsome mother of the no less fearsome Daltons! She has generously bequeathed to them the worst aspects of her own character: wickedness, greed and deviousness! And yet, watching her rock back and forth in her old armchair, one might almost take her for harmless….
