Alban Ficat has once again amazed us with this seminal scene in which Peewit (accompanied by Johan) has come to ‘Smurf’ his little friends! The ‘ligne claire’ style seems to hold no secrets for him, and I thoroughly enjoyed advising him on the design of this statuette. Indeed, there were certainly enough of us to tackle such crucial questions as: Does Peewit’s tuft of hair hang over both sides at the same time? Or: Just how tall is a Smurf, given that Peewit’s head is half the length of his body? And have you noticed the endearing gesture of the Smurf leaning on Peewit’s thumb to stop himself from falling over? That’s precisely what makes the sculptor’s interpretation so fascinating: finding that little detail the illustrator didn’t specify and taking the opportunity to add his own twist!
